Ill. gun owners, activists lobby in Springfield
SPRINGFIELD (AP) — Illinois gun owners and activists are scheduled to rally Wednesday in Springfield to encourage state lawmakers to eventually relax the list of outlawed places for concealed carry.
The event kicks off with a rally at the Prairie Capitol Convention Center at 11:30 a.m. Participants will march through Springfield to the state Capitol's for a 1 p.m. rally before lobbying various representatives.
Legislation making Illinois the last state in the nation to allow concealed carry was passed by the Legislature last summer.
The online application process for residents to obtain permits was launched in January, and some of the first licenses were mailed out this week.
State Rep. Brandon Phelps of Harrisburg says the law passed by the legislature last year is a "good bill" but wants to make it better.
