I went to meet the candidates for county sheriff. Mr. Simonton made comments that he could get grants to help the department and had connections to help with training. That sounds good, but I’m not sure I believe that.
He also said that he wanted to interact more with the city police department. I don’t think we need the city police chief making any decisions for the county.
Mr. Simonton, you have retired from one state job with a full pension. If elected, how many years are you going to invest in our county sheriff’s department before you decide to retire, with yet another pension from our county? You mentioned you were going to give your pension back to the county to help with training; that cannot legally happen.
I feel Sheriff Varga did a good job answering questions and gave us the best insight as to how he runs the department. Varga has spent his time solely to make our county the best he can with what the county board gives him.
To all voters, do your homework. We’ve all been duped by candidates who talk a good story and when elected, cannot live up to their promises.
