Two Golden Warriors came tantalizingly close to the state boys swimming finals on Friday. Sterling's Keaton Dir and Cade Coursey finished just outside of the top 12 after the preliminaries at Evanston High School.
Dir, a senior, placed 14th in the 200 freestyle in 1 minute, 43.41 seconds. The final qualifying spot went to Lake Park's Sean Gregor at 1:43.22. The mark improves the school record that Dir set in the event last week at the Rock Island Sectional. His time there was 1:43.87.
The top time in the 200 freestyle was 1:40.27 by Normal U-High's Adam Drury. Newman's Warren Melton finished 23rd at 1:44.70.
Dir also competed in the 100 butterfly, where he placed 24th in 52.90 seconds. The final qualifier was Elk Grove Village's Colin Williams at 51.16. The top time was IMSA's Steven Tan at 48.41.
Coursey, a junior, competed in the state diving prelims for the second straight year. Coursey missed advancing to finals by just over five points. Coursey's score of 267.50 placed him in 15th. Peoria Notre Dame's Max Reynolds was 12th at 274.80.
The top diving score for the day was by Chicago Heights Marian's Joey Cifelli at 346.50.
Dixon 64, Geneseo 53: The Dukes outscored the Maple Leafs by 10 in the third quarter to provide a cushion in a NIB-12 West win in Geneseo.
Dixon (21-6, 8-2) had four players reach double figures. Cal Jarrett led the way with 15 points, followed by Laron Carr's 14 points, and 12 points by Isaiah Roby and Kyle LeBlanc.
Drew Himmelman scored 24 points for Geneseo (11-13, 4-6).
Sterling 53, LaSalle-Peru 45: Zach Rehmert scored 18 points, including making all 11 of his free-throw attempts, as the Warriors closed the regular season with a win at LaSalle-Peru.
Sterling (10-15, 5-5 NIB-12 West) trailed the Cavaliers (10-16, 2-8) 24-16 at half before rallying back. Joe Brouilette added 10 points, and Draque Penaflor-Heier had nine points.
Logan Zeman made six 3s and scored 22 points for LaSalle-Peru.
2A Princeton Regional
Seneca 59, Bureau Valley 54: The Storm rallied back from a 32-13 halftime deficit to make it interesting in the championship game of the 2A Princeton Regional.
Parker Neuhalfen paced Bureau Valley (19-12) with 20 points, and Ryan Young added 12. Josh Mead had 11 points.
Conlan Callahan had 19 points for Seneca (24-5).
