Quinn redirects party campaign funds to charity

CHAMPAIGN (AP) — Gov. Pat Quinn and state Sen. Mike Frerichs have redirected campaign donations to charities after determining they came from a Democratic county organization led by a state employee.

The donations came from the Douglas County Democratic Party. The chairman is a Department of Natural Resources employee.

A St. Louis coal company gave the county party $10,000 in August. The organization then contributed $7,500 to Quinn's campaign, including $5,000 in cash.

Frerichs of Champaign received $250. The Democrat is running for state treasurer.

A Quinn spokeswoman says the campaign doesn't accept contributions from state employees. The Champaign News Gazette reports (http://bit.ly/1hlLLi7) that the employee has been reassigned pending a department investigation.

The spokeswoman says Quinn promptly gave $2,000 to each of four charities after discovering the source of the money Wednesday.
