Lee needs a new sheriff

In my 23 years of being a firefighter, I’ve developed relationships with firefighters, jailers, dispatchers, EMTs and deputies, and I can tell you it’s time for change.

Sheriff Varga’s antics of doing what and when he wants, have to end.

Not only are his poor decisions affecting investigations, but his promotions of deputies are illegal. Prior to Varga, all deputies were given the opportunity to test for promotion.

However, with Varga, not one promotional test was given. He simply decides who he likes and promotes them. One was done so secretly, other deputies did not know about it. Was this approved by the county board? Was the county’s merit board utilized in recent promotions? The answer is no.

Illinois Statute 55 ILCS 5, Article 3, Division 3-8, Sec. 3-8011 states: “Whenever a position in a higher rank is to be filled, the merit commission shall certify to sheriff the names of eligible persons who stand highest upon the promotional register for the rank to which the position belongs. The commission shall make certifications for promotion on the basis of ascertained merit, seniority of service, and physical and other qualifying examinations.”

Citizens of Lee County, shouldn’t the sheriff follow the law?
