Community education courses prepare students for new careers

DIXON – Five health-related courses will be offered through Sauk Valley Community College’s Community Education office.

The classes, which will be at the college, 173 state Route 2, are:

Clinical Medical Assistant Program: This course involves classroom hours and clinical externship. The program is offered from 6 to 9:30 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdas March 4-June 12, 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. March 22, April 5, May 10 and 17, and June 7. The cost is $2, 399. The studies prepare the student to assist physicians by performing functions related to the clinical responsibilities of a medical office. The externship will be with a local healthcare provider. Instruction includes routine laboratory procedures and preparing patients for examination and treatment.

Phlebotomy Technician Program: The 90-hour course prepares professionals to collect blood specimens from clients for laboratory analysis. It is appropriate for those who have their CNA or other medical training. The class is from 6 to 9:30 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays March 18-May 27 and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. April 5, 26, and May 17. The cost is $1,599.

EKG Technician Certification Program: This 50-hour course teaches students to function as an EKG techincian. They will practice with EKG equipment and perform hands-on laboratory work. It is for students who have their CNA or other medical training. The class is from 6 to 9:30 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays March 24-May 12. The cost is $999.

Pharmacy Technician Program: The 50-hour program prepares students to work as a pharmacy technician in a retail or other pharmcy setting. Course content includes pharmacy medical terminology and reading and interpreting prescriptions The classes are from 6 to 9:30 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays March 18-May 6. The cost is $999.

Dental Assisting Program: A 60-hour course, the program instructs students for entry level positons. They will be familiarized with all areas of pre-clinical dental assisting. The hours are 6 to 9:30 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays March 24-May19. The cost is $1,199.
