Cougars claim crown

Eastland girls win regional; Newman boys beat Amboy

The Eastland Cougars won the 1A Pearl City Regional championship on Friday by knocking of the two-time defending state champion Aquin Bulldogs 64-58.

The Cougars (25-5) won, in part, by sinking free throws. Eastland went 23-for-24 from the line. Lexis Macomber paced Eastland with 22 points, and Izy Todd had 11.

Haley Chang led Aquin (21-10) with 19 points. She made 13 of her 15 free-throw attempts. Cassidy Arndt added 15 points.

Dixon 49, Streator 25: Carly Hartle scored 11 points and grabbed eight rebounds to lead the Duchesess past the Bulldogs in Streator.

Also for Dixon (16-11, 6-4 NIB-12 West), Brooke Bailey had nine points and 10 boards, while Brittani Sohn added nine points and five steals.

Morgan Sharisky had eight points, five rebounds, four assists and four steals for Streator (1-23, 0-10).

Boys basketball

Newman 79, Amboy 42:John Payan made six 3-pointers and scored 22 points, as the Comets cruised to a Three Rivers North win in Sterling.

Noah McCarty had 12 points, and Nate Terveer added 11 for Newman (24-2, 12-1).

Damon Quest scored 15 points for Amboy (2-20, 1-11).

Bureau Valley 68, Riverdale 55: The Storm pulled away by outscoring the Rams 23-13 in the third quarter in Port Byron.

Parker Neuhalfen scored 24 points for Bureau Valley (18-9, 10-2), and Tommy Johnston added 14 points.

Cole Solomon had 16 points for Riverdale (7-20, 3-10).

Morrison 61, Erie 51: Kaleb Church scored 22 points as the Mustangs won a Three Rivers North game in Erie.

Hunter Hamstra scored 11 points for Morrison (12-15, 8-5).

Kallen Jepson and Owen McConnell each had 11 points for Erie (2-23, 1-11).

Prophetstown 49, Fulton 42: Ethan Howard scored 11 of his game-high 16 points in the decisive fourth quarter as the Prophets pulled off the upset in Fulton.

Prophetstown (12-13, 7-5 Three Rivers North) trailed 27-26 entering the final 8 minutes before closing with a 23-15 run. Grant Ames added 13 points for the Prophets.

Zach Barber led the Steamers (19-7, 8-4) with 13 points, and Matt Dail added 12.

Faith wins twice:The Faith Christian Falcons won two games in the consolation bracket of the ACSI state tournament in Kankakaee.

The Falcons (7-12) fell 60-38 to Rock Valley in their first-round game Thursday to drop into the consolation bracket.

Friday, Faith beat Galesburg Christian 52-48. Isaac Schuler scored 24 points, including two dunks, and had 10 rebounds. Ben Bierdeman added eight points.

The Falcons followed that with a 61-56 win over Faith Christian from Wausau, Wis. Schuler had 28 points and 13 rebounds in that game, and Andrew Robertson added 10 points.
