Sterling chess team progressing at state

The Sterling High School chess team has played well after three rounds of the IHSA state tournament Friday in Peoria, coach Joel Penne reports.

Sterling won against Bradley Bourbonnais in the first round by a score of 41.5-26.5. In the next round, Sterling gave 13th-ranked Nequa Valley a great match but eventually lost by a score of 40.5-27.5.

Every Sterling player won in the third round against Chicago's Brother Rice. The final score was 68-0.

The team will play one more round tonight and three on Saturday. Sterling's third board, junior Nick Byington, and sixth board, junior Tyler Austin, are undefeated at 3-0 and are currently ranked in the top 10 on their respective boards, Penne said.
