Shoulder tightness for Cubs’ pitcher

Jake Arrieta might not be ready for the start of the Chicago Cubs’ regular season because of right shoulder tightness.

General manager Jed Hoyer revealed that Arrieta, who was acquired last July from Baltimore and went 4-2 with a 3.66 ERA in six starts with the Cubs, felt discomfort this winter and will be brought along slowly during spring training.

Former Sox manager suffers stroke

Braves top scout and former White Sox manager Jim Fregosi suffered a stroke while on a cruise with Major League Baseball alumni, a source confirmed.

Fregosi, 71, has been hospitalized in the Cayman Islands while his family tries to get him transferred to a Miami hospital. He managed the White Sox from 1986-89.

Rays trade three players for Karn

Tampa Bay has traded catcher Jose Lobaton, outfielder Drew Vettleson, and pitcher Felipe Rivero to the Nationals for pitcher Nathan Karns.

Karns, 26, had three major-league starts. He went 0-1 with a 7.50 ERA in 12 innings last year. Lobaton, 29, hit .249 with seven home runs and 32 RBIs last season.

Lions to release Burleson, Delmas

The Detroit Lions are releasing reciever Nate Burleson and safety Louis Delmas.

Burleson, 32, caught 39 passes for 461 yards and a touchdown in nine games last season. He missed time after injuring his arm in a car accident.

The Lions drafted Delmas in the second round in 2009, and he’s been a consistent starter for them since.

US & Mexico to face off before Cup

The United States men’s national team will face arch-rival Mexico on April 2 at University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, Ariz., as final preparations for the 2014 World Cup kick in to high gear.

The U.S. clinched its seventh straight World Cup appearance by beating Mexico 2-0 in CONCACAF World Cup qualifying. Jurgen Klinsmann’s side opens against Ghana on June 16, plays Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal 6 days later, and closes the group stage against Germany on June 26.
