Prep roundup: Locals move on to sectionals
Six girls bowlers, 18 wrestlers advance out of regionals
The Erie-Prophetstown Panthers and Morrison Mustangs each had a pair of individual champions Saturday at the Class 1A Erie Regional, with the Panthers qualifying six wrestlers for next week's Byron Sectional, and the Mustangs sending five wrestlers through.
Erie-Prophetstown took third as a team with 132 points, behind winner Sherrard (194.5) and runner-up Mercer County (178.5). Fulton placed ninth with 31 points, and Cole Grant was the Steamers' lone qualifier at 126 pounds.
Jared Cole (145) and Nick Williams (170) won titles for the Panthers, while Joe Eads (106) and Austin Keller (160) were titleists for the Mustangs.
Erie-Prophetstown also had four runner-up finishers. Josh Bowling was second at 126, Grady Todd took second at 132, Josh Wheeler finished second at 138, and Dylan Binion was second at 152.
Morrison's runners-up were Cody Vanderlaan at 113, and Austin Shoup at 182. Tyler Todd placed third at 285.
Oregon 5th, AFC 8th at Stillman: The Hawks qualified six wrestlers to next week's 1A Byron Sectional, as they scored 119 points thanks to four runners-up and two third-place finishes at the Stillman Valley Regional.
Corey Grady (138 pounds), Dominic Marchetti (145), Garrett Rude (160) and David Labash (285) all advanced to the title bout before losing. In third-place matches, Tyler Blume won a major decision at 195, and Travis Burke won by pin at 220. The top three individuals in each weight class move on to next weekend.
Dakota and Byron ran away from the field, with the Indians topping the Tigers 272-235 for the team title. The Raiders placed eighth with 21 points, and did not qualify any individuals.
Six locals advance at Sycamore: Dixon, Sterling and Oregon each had a pair of individuals move on at the Sycamore Regional.
Dixon's Emily Quaco (1,094) and Katlyn Bay (1,021), Sterling's Magan Tintori (1,051) and Destinee Howard (1,043), and Oregon twin sisters Abigail (1,082) and Alyson Scheidecker (1,030) were all among the top 10 individuals not on the top four advancing teams. They will bowl next weekend at the Freeport Sectional.
The Duchesses were sixth as a team with a 4,925 total pinfall, while the Hawks were seventh (4,770) and the Golden Warriors were 10th (4,567). Marengo won the team title with a 5,588, while Belvidere North (5,453), Sycamore (5,322) and Jacobs (5,200) also qualified for sectional.
Belvidere North's Haley Solberg was the individual champion with a six-game series of 1,247.
Sterling 3rd at NIIC: The Golden Warriors got a win from Keaton Dir, runner-up finishes from Dir and Cade Coursey, and a third in the 400 freestyle relay en route to a third-place finish at the NICC Meet in Byron.
Dir won the 100 butterfly in 54.62 seconds, and took second in the 200 freestyle (1:47.53). He joined Sam Wike, Lucas Campbell and Blake Ruiz on Sterling's third-place 400 freestyle relay team (3:32.48), and its fourth-place 200 medley relay team (1:46.77). Coursey added a second-place finish in the 1-meter diving competition (354.14 points).
The Warriors were third as a team with 184 points, behind Normal U-High (298) and IMSA (235.5). Newman placed seventh with 84 points, and Morrison was eighth with 71.
Warren Melton paced the Comets, placing second behind Dir in the 100 butterfly (55.11), and third in the 200 freestyle (1:47.88) – again, right behind Dir. He joined Todd Nelson, Aidan Bollman and Robbie Hicks to finish fifth in the 400 freestyle relay (3:49.90), and Nelson, Jakob Vetter and Andrew Schmitt to take sixth in the 200 freestyle relay (1:41.75).
Kyle Workman led the Mustangs, taking fifth in the 200 freestyle (2:00.25) and sixth in the 500 freestyle (5:42.16). He also swam on the sixth-place 400 freestyle relay team (3:57.98) with Andrew Rinker, Eric Sipes and Kasey Hodge.
