Girls basketball: SVM scouts 2014 1A/2A regionals

2A Oregon

When: Monday, Tuesday, Thursday

Where: Blackhawk Center, Oregon

Teams: No. 1 Oregon (16-11), No. 2 Morrison (13-13), No. 3 Newman (7-15), No. 4 Fulton (3-23), No. 5 West Carroll (3-22)

Players to watch: Chelsea Eads, Morrison sr. G/F; Lakin Goodman, Morrison jr. G; Sam Lambrigtsen, Oregon sr. G; Averi Leitzen, Fulton so. G; Abby Maike, West Carroll jr. G; Mary Alice Oswalt, Newman sr. G; Aubree Schmitt, Newman jr. G; Emy Wright, Oregon jr. G

Outlook: Oregon with defending SVM player of the year, Sam Lambrigtsen, appear to be the clear favorites going into this regional. Morrison has made a nice step forward under second-year coach Tyler Whitebread. If players like Lakin Goodman and Chelsea Eads get hot, they could compete with the Hawks. Newman needs to play very good defense throughout to make a run.

Favorite: Oregon

Darkhorse: Newman

Winner to: Aurora Christian Sectional vs. St. Bede Regional winner, 6 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 18

SVM prediction: Oregon

2A St. Bede

When: Monday, Tuesday, Thursday

Where: St. Bede High School, Peru

Teams: No. 1 Prophetstown (25-2), No. 2 Riverdale (16-10), No. 3 St. Bede (11-18), No. 4 Hall (7-16), No. 5 Bureau Valley (9-15), No. 6 Princeton (2-23)

Players to watch: Brianna Barajas, Princeton jr. F; Hanna Bima, St. Bede so. C; Nicole Bornsheuer, Bureau Valley sr. C; Lauren Claus, Riverdale sr.; Brenna Faletti, Hall sr. G; Stephenny Farrell, Princeton jr. F; Emily Hoscheid, Hall jr. F; Helena Osk Arnadottir, Bureau Valley sr. G; Sydney Mericle, Riverdale sr. F; Corrie Reiley, Prophetstown jr. G; Laura Sickley, St. Bede sr. G; Heather Strike, Prophetstown jr. G

Outlook: If the Prophets continue to play as well as they have through the regular season, then it doesn't seem like they should have too much of a problem advancing to the sectional. The biggest roadblock will come from Riverdale, which has bonafide scorers in Lauren Claus and Sydney Mericle.

Favorite: Prophetstown

Darkhorse: Riverdale

Winner to: Aurora Christian Sectional vs. Oregon Regional winner, 6 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 18

SVM prediction: Prophetstown

1A Amboy

When: Monday, Wednesday, Thursday

Where: Amboy High School

Teams: No. 1 Amboy (18-6), No. 2 Erie (19-9), No. 3 AFC (15-10), No. 4 Milledgeville (7-19), No. 5 Polo (1-24)

Players to watch: Morgan Adolph, Milledgeville sr. F; Courtney Cobert, Erie sr. G; Rachel Cobert, Erie so. F; Alisyn Essex, AFC jr. F; Kaitlyn Leibing, Amboy jr. C; KeeLey Meyer, Polo jr. F; Allison Prestegaard, AFC jr. C; Courtney Swalve, Milledgeville sr. C; Delaney Wilhelm, Amboy fr. G

Outlook: The Clippers have been the queens of the close-game victory this season, and it seems likely they'll have to win at least one close game to get out of this regional. Erie has been getting hot the last couple weeks, and has lost in a regional final the last 2 years. AFC is a sleeper with a big shot blocker in Prestegaard in the middle.

Favorite: Amboy

Darkhorse: AFC

Winner to: Forreston Sectional vs. Rockford Christian Life Regional winner, 6 p.m. Monday, Feb. 17

SVM prediction: Erie

1A Pearl City

When: Monday, Wednesday, Friday

Where: Pearl City High School

Teams: No. 1 Eastland (23-4), No. 2 Aquin (20-9), No. 3 Pearl City (16-11), No. 4 Lena-Winslow (13-9), No. 5 Forreston (16-13), No. 6 Orangeville (5-18)

Players to watch: Erica Albrecht, Pearl City sr. G; Ashley Block, Lena-Winslow sr. G; Haley Chang, Aquin jr. G; Maggie Curry, Forreston sr. G; Hannah Hake, Eastland sr. F; Rachel Harn, Aquin jr. G; Dani Lee, Pearl City jr. F; Lexis Macomber, Eastland jr. F; Kenzie Temperly, Lena-Winslow so. F; Rachel Walton, Forreston sr. G

Outlook: While the Cougars are ranked No. 2 in Class 1A, this regional will not be a cakewalk. Sitting in the No. 2 seed is the two time defending state championship Aquin Bulldogs. Even beyond that are three teams with winning records. An off night against any of the teams could result in an unexpected early exit.

Favorite: Eastland

Darkhorse: Pearl City

Winner to: Forreston Sectional vs. Warren Regional winner, 8 p.m. Monday, Feb. 17

SVM prediction: Eastland
