Icy roads causing accidents in central Illinois

Published: Thursday, Feb. 6, 2014 2:30 p.m. CST

CHAMPAIGN (AP) — Ice continues to make highways in central Illinois dangerous. Police blamed icy interstates for one fatal accident and others that involved injuries.

Illinois State Police say the driver of a sport utility vehicle died after his vehicle crashed into a semitrailer on Interstate 57 near Mattoon around 4 a.m. Thursday. A three-vehicle accident on Interstate 74 west of Champaign around 9 a.m. injured one person. Police said a truck skidded and struck two vehicles.

Illinois State Police say they've helped dozens of stuck drivers in the region and handled at least 13 accidents.

Wednesday's storm left deep snow across the region. Temperatures near zero have since turned some to ice.

The Illinois Department of Transportation says parts of interstates 57, 74 and 72 are icy.

Rock Falls is considering a ban on leaf burning. Should the city finally take that step?
Yes. Sterling and Dixon have had bans for years. It’s time for Rock Falls to impose a ban.
No. It would be too great a burden for homeowners to dispose of fallen leaves in other ways.
