CBS wins bid for more games

The NFL announced that it will team with long-time broadcast partner CBS to produce and televise Thursday Night Football for the 2014 season.

CBS will air eight early season games that will be simulcast on NFL Network. NFL Network will then take it from there, airing eight late-season games in the run-up to the playoffs.

Cassell opts out of Vikings’ deal

Matt Cassell wants to see what his options will be in free agency.

Cassell, who ended last season as the Vikings’ starting quarterback, opted out of his final year of a 2-year contract. Cassell started six games, passing for 1,807 yards, 11 touchdowns and an 81.6 quarterback rating.

Former Cubs LaHair joins Tribe

The Cleveland Indians signed free agent and former Chicago Cubs first baseman/outfielder Bryan LaHair on Wednesday to a minor league contract with a non-roster invitation to spring training camp.

LaHair, 31, is a veteran of three major league seasons with the Seattle Mariners (2008) and Cubs (2011-12), compiling a career batting mark of .260 with 26 doubles, 21 home runs and 56 RBIs in 195 games.

Suns halt talks for Gasol

The Phoenix Suns have stopped talks to acquire Lakers center Pau Gasol because they feel the Lakers want too much for the veteran.

The Suns could own four picks in the June draft, and the Lakers coveted one of the more valuable two – the pick the Suns could potentially get from Minnesota or the one they might receive from Washington. Both of those picks are protected and will revert back to Washington and Minnesota if they stumble.

Beckham exercises option for team

David Beckham is bringing the gift of Major League Soccer to Miami.

Now he must deliver a place for his team to play.

If there was a surprise amid the festival atmosphere of Wednesday’s announcement that the British soccer legend has exercised an option to purchase an expansion franchise to play in Miami, it was how much has to be done before the yet-to-be-named team plays its first game.
