Vernon F. Elgin

TAMPICO – Vernon F. Elgin, 87, of Tampico, died Sunday, Feb. 2, 2014, at Prophets Good Samaritan Center in Prophetstown. He worked at Northwestern Steel and Wire Co., retiring after 35 years.

Vernon was born Oct. 3, 1926, in Annawan, the son of Edward Wm. and Mary Jane (Chilerey) Elgin. He was a World War II veteran, serving in the Army. He married Bernadine Anderson on Dec. 8, 1951, in Kewanee. She preceded him in death on Aug. 27, 2012.

Survivors include four sons, Ronald (Anita) Elgin of Tampico, Darryl (Karen) Elgin of Rock Falls, Marvin (Charlene) Elgin of Hatley, Wis., and Lauren (Sue) Elgin of East Moline; 10 grandchildren;  22 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He also was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter, Janice; one brother, Kenneth; and one sister, Geneva.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Garland Funeral Home in Tampico. The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Friday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Karl Kaiser, pastor of Tampico Baptist Church officiating. Burial will be at Tampico Memorial Cemetery.

A memorial has been established to Tampico Baptist Church.
