DIXON – Darrell F. Moss, 79, of Dixon, died at 12:50 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 1, 2014, at Serenity Hospice & Home in Oregon. He worked as a state inspector for the Illinois Department of Transportation for 50 years and 10 months, retiring Jan. 1, 2005. Before that he was on the survey crew for IDOT.

He was born March 4, 1934, in Dixon, to Eugene L. and Eva (Messer) Moss. He graduated from Dixon High School in 1953, and earned his PCI certificate. He married the former Esther “Marie” DeGroff on Feb. 2, 1960, at their home in Dixon.

Darrell served in the Army. He was a lifelong member of Dixon Church of the Brethren, where he was on the church board for numerous terms. He also was heavily involved with the Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts Troop 85 at Church of the Brethren, from 1979 till the present.

Darrell enjoyed being in the outdoors, camping, watching campfires, watching birds, and tending to his many birdfeeders. The world has lost a great man who is loved and will be missed by many.

Survivors include his wife; and his daughters, Linda Moss and Barbara (Kenneth Kennedy) Moss, both of Dixon.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Patricia Jean Moss, on March 28, 1979; his father, Eugene Leo Moss in 1959; his mother, Eva Lucille Moss in 1955; his stepmother, Hazel Messer-Moss in 1987; sisters, Bernadine Gerdes, Geraldine Wolf, and Eva Lucille Moss; and a brother, Virgil Eugene Moss.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at Chapel Hill Funeral Home in Dixon. The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Marty Creager officiating. Interment, with full military honors accorded by the Dixon combined veterans organizations, will be at Chapel Hill Memorial Park in Dixon.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Dixon Church of the Brethren.
