High schoolers to compete in trivia contest

STERLING – A number of activities are planned for February at Sterling Public Library, 102 W. Third St.

High School students from Dixon, Newman Central Catholic and Sterling high schools will participate in a trivia bowl at 6 p.m. Tuesday. The theme this year is "Legends of the American West Real and Fictional" Each team is given a list of names to study. One team from each school competes in 5-question rounds.

The library has a new digital media library, Baker & Taylor's Axis 360. Axis 360 Magic Wall presents the titles available for patrons to read or listen to on their devices. Delivery of material is cloud-based, so there is no need to connect to a computer. Books are available for all ages and can be downloaded in print or audio format. Check-out time is 2 weeks.

Other events are:

Feb 14: The movie, "Despicable Me 2," will be shown at 1 p.m. Storytimes continue at the library from 10 to 10:30 a.m. Fridays. Children 3 to 5 will hear about "Buddies & Pals."

Feb 25: Meal and a Movie will present "Laura," starring Gene Tierney. Soup, sandwich and a beverage will be served at noon, followed by the murder mystery. Donations will be accepted. Gaffey Home Nursing also will provide blood pressure screenings.

The Adult Serious Readers' Group will meet at 6 p.m. in the conference room. February's selection is "Netherland," by Joseph O'Neill. In March, the group will read "Fight Behavior," by Barbara Kingsolver.
