AURORA (AP) — A suburban Chicago driver is being held on $150,000 bond for a crash that killed an Illinois Tollway worker and injured a state trooper.

Renato V. Velasquez appeared in DuPage County court on Wednesday. He's facing a series of felonies for Monday night's crash on Interstate 88 near Aurora.

He's charged with operating a commercial motor vehicle while impaired or fatigued and making a false report of record and duty status. Prosecutors tell The (Arlington Heights) Daily Herald that Velasquez was in the middle of a 37-hour shift.

The crash killed 39-year-old maintenance worker Vincent Petrella and critically injured Trooper Douglas Balder. The two were assisting a disabled truck.

Velasquez's lawyer says the crash was "an unfortunate, tragic accident." He said the 46-year-old didn't see emergency lights before the wreck.
