Steven J. Califf

ROCK ISLAND – Steven J. Califf, 43, of Rock Island, died Monday, Jan. 20, 2014.

Steven was born Aug. 31, 1970, in Englewood, Colo., a son of John P. Califf and Nancy Telleen Califf. He attended public schools in Littleton, Colo., and graduated from Dixon High School. Steven graduated from Augustana College in 1994. He was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Rock Island.

After graduation from Augustana, he lived in Dixon, Peoria, and for the last 12 years, Rock Island. He held various jobs during those years, including work at Rock Island Arsenal Commissary. He also had many volunteer positions.

Steven loved writing poetry. He enjoyed travel vacations with family, including trips to Ecuador, Alaska, Caribbean Islands, and Mexico. He enjoyed sports, and played soccer, tennis and golf. He was an avid sports fan, and supported professional teams in Chicago and Denver.

Throughout his adult years, Steven dealt with severe mental illness. He was working with professionals at Transitions, and lived at the Transitions Residential Program in 2002 and 2003, and again in 2013 and 2014. He was a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Rock Island.

Steven is survived by his mother, Nancy T. Califf; brother and sister-in-law, Bill and Jenny Califf; nephews, Marcus and Jackson Califf; aunts and uncles, John and Betsy Wheelan and Bill and Pam Telleen; and cousins, Charles, Peter and Brian Wheelan, Matthew and Erik Telleen, and Beth Allinder.

He was preceded in death by his father, John; and grandparents, Junius and Katharine Califf, and Frank and Carla Telleen.

Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday and a memorial service at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Rock Island. Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home in Rock Island is handling arrangements.

Memorials may be made to St. John’s Lutheran Church and Transitions Mental Health Services.
