Follow up with more facts on other pensions
I can’t say enough about how much I appreciate the quality of Sauk Valley Media. SVM reporter David Giuliani fits right in with the quality of the paper.
I truly appreciate his coverage of public entities that keeps the supporting public informed and encourages accountability.
At this point, I would like to caution Mr. Giuliani as to the tone of his “Out There” columns recently, which have become condescending and somewhat resentful.
Particularly “Are teacher pensions a good deal?” compelled me to write. I credit him for addressing a recent letter and his willingness to seek a knowledgeable source, TRS spokesman Dave Urbanek, for clarification.
Mr. Giuliani promised to continue follow up with more facts, which I will look forward to. To maintain a level of fairness, please also consider comparing Social Security benefits for people comparably paid.
No teacher that I know of went into the education profession for the pension. It was a promise made by the state of Illinois.
Unlike Social Security, our pension system is in trouble, not because of retirees drawing on it, but because our legislators could not keep their hands off of it and dipped into the funds for other uses. They never paid it back.
No one resents the pensions that our legislators qualify for. Which leads me to my last point: Why does everyone resent teachers’ pensions? I trust Mr. Giuliani will consider pursuing the answer to that.
