DIXON – Dixon VFW Post 540 is celebrating its belated birthday Sunday.
The post, which had its 90th anniversary on Nov. 13, was founded in 1923, said Post Commander Tom Bushman, adding that it was founded in memory of Horace Ortt, one of the first soldiers killed during World War I.
For the anniversary celebration, the post will have a pancake breakfast, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., and then starting at 2 p.m., will have a presentation about the post’s history and work it does in the community. There will also be cake, Bushman said.
“This is open to the public,” he said. “We want to the public to see what we do and the organizations that we’re involved with.”
The post helps veterans deal with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and prepare for life after the military. The post also works with Meals on Wheels, Habitat for Humanity and the U.S Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots Program, among others, Bushman said.
