Robert Dawson

POLO – Robert Dawson, 89, of Polo, died Tuesday, Jan. 21, 2014, at Select Specialty Hospice in Davenport, Iowa. He owned and operated Dawson Painting Service for 40 years, retiring in 2000.

Robert was born Feb. 17, 1924, in Sterling, the son of Edward and Elizabeth (McCormick) Dawson. He served in the Marines during World War II. He married Dorothy Deets on May 26, 1945, in Morehead City, N.C. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Sterling.

Survivors include three daughters, Cathy (Henry) Jackson of Tempe, Ariz., Charlotte (Tom) Cooney of Warrenville, and Mary Sue (Greg) Farster of Mariquopa, Ariz.; one son, Raymond (Jean) Dawson of Polo; one sister, Margaret Vondracek of Kaukauna, Wis.; one brother, James (Suzie) Dawson of Decatur; nine grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife; parents; daughter, Christine, in infancy; and one sister, Betty Brown.

Visitation will be from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday at McDonald Funeral Home, 505 First Ave., Sterling. Celebration of the Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Sterling, with the Rev. Bruce Ludeke officiating. Burial will be at Sacred Heart Cemetery in Sterling.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established to Sacred Heart Catholic Church.
