The List: What's in a list? Just about anything

Hello. My name is Jeff Rogers and I am addicted to lists and ratings. I've been that way since I was a kid.

In the 1970s, I'd listen with rapt attention as WLS played its weekly countdown of pop music hits.

Where would "Kung Fu Fighting" by Carl Douglas end up this week?!

What would the station's top song of 1977 be? Debbie Boone's "You Light Up My Life?" Really? Argh!

I couldn't wait to grab the sports section to see where the Lanark Beavers boys basketball team was ranked by local sportswriters.

I memorized the AP Top 25 college basketball polls, and paid close attention to where my favorite TV shows placed in the Nielsen ratings.

My, how times have changed.

Today, I get my music countdown fix on Sirius Radio. Alt Nation. No Top 40.

I do my own rankings for favorite albums, TV shows, books and movies – sometimes on paper, but often only in my head. There's a lot of stuff up there.

I'm a sucker for online click-throughs to stories with headlines like "15 Best Places to Live in the U.S." and "10 Beers No One Drinks Anymore." But I only click to those stories at home. Never at work.

At work, my daily tasks are entries on a list that I cross off when completed. Writing this blog piece is one of the last things on my list for today.

This is a start of a blog we're going to call simply "The List."

I will share lists whenever one comes to mind. Others in the SVM newsroom will do the same. Sometimes, we'll ask you to give us your lists.

What will we list? Just about anything.

But to give you some indication of what to expect from me, here are my interests. Ranked, of course, in a list.

1. Sports (In order, NFL, college basketball, MLB, NHL, NASCAR – yes, NASCAR, college football, NBA)

2. Music (mostly alternative – indie and otherwise – with a healthy dose of rock I listened to growing up in the 70s and 80s)

3. TV shows (Usually, the weirder, the better.)

4. Books (With a Nook, I probably read more now than I ever have.)

5. Food (C'mon, a man's gotta eat!)

6. Politics (red v. blue)

7. Travel destinations (think warm)

8. Beer (crafts>domestics)

9. Local news (Yes, I do enjoy a good beer more than a good news story.)

10. Shopping (I must assume my wife will read this.)

My next list: My favorite albums of 2013.
