STERLING – Donald F. Stern, 90, of Sterling, died Tuesday, Jan. 14, 2014, at CGH Medical Center in Sterling. Donald had worked as a carpenter and farmer for many years.

He was born June 19, 1923, near Coleta, the son of Frank and Anna (Fulfs) Stern. He married Ruth J. Rohde on Nov. 12, 1942, in Sterling. She died Jan. 18, 2009. He was a member of St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church in Sterling and Carpenter Union Local 790. He was a past member of the Coleta Fire Department, Sterling Family Moose, and Sterling American Legion. Donald was one of the founding members of the Coleta Sportsman’s Club. He had enjoyed snowmobiling, fishing, boating, camping, and traveling in their motorhome.

Surviving are his two daughters, Judy (Bob) Bartel and Donna (Dave) Kendall, both of Sterling; his three grandchildren, Steve (Janelle) Bartel, Tracy (Jason) Volk, and Dan (Susan) Bartel; seven great-grandchildren, Olympia Powell, Hunter Bartel, Walker Bartel, Jesslynn Bartel, Parker Volk, Payton Volk, and Caleb Bartel; and his brother, Kenneth Stern of Rock Falls.

He also was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Harold and Lawrence Stern; and his sister, Vera Kelm.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at McDonald Funeral Home, 505 First Ave., Sterling. The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church in Sterling, with the Rev. Brandon Nelson, pastor, officiating. Burial will be at Oak Knoll Memorial Park in Sterling.

In lieu of flowers, memorials to St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church and the Coleta Fire Department would be appreciated.
