Amtrak service resumes normal schedule in Illinois

SPRINGFIELD (AP) — Amtrak trains are back on their normal schedules in Illinois after snow and frigid weather caused major service disruptions.

The (Springfield) State Journal-Register reports (http://bit.ly/19rF6BO ) normal service resumed Monday after more than a week of delays and cancellations that began Jan. 4 when snow began falling across the state. The problems intensified after bitter temperatures and high winds caused snow to blow and drift while ice coated some tracks.

Amtrak spokesman Marc Magliari says rail cars and locomotives were damaged by the storm that shut down some tracks.

At one point during the bitter temperatures, three trains loaded with about 500 passengers became stuck overnight because of blowing and drifting snow. Some areas of Illinois got more than 15 inches of snow while others set record lows.
