Safe commute meeting planned

Published: Saturday, Jan. 18, 2014 1:15 a.m. CST

TAMPICO – A public information meeting on Tampico’s Safe Routes to School will be at 6 p.m. Tuesday at the village hall, 104 W. Market St.

The goal is to launch the program in the fall. It is designed to encourage students to walk and ride bicycles to school.

During the meeting, a PowerPoint presentation will be shown, and collected information will be reviewed. Input from students and parents is welcome.

According to the 2009 National Household Travel Survey, in 1969, 89 percent of students from kindergarten to eighth grade who lived within 1 mile of school usually walked or bicycled there. By 2009, the percentage dropped to 35 percent even once a week. Visit www.dot.il.gov/SafeRoutes or www.saferoutesinfo.org for more information.
