STERLING – The Illinois State Police is urging drivers to stay home this evening unless it's absolutely necessary.

Driving conditions are extremely hazardous and, according to Lt. John Biffany, several dozen accidents and hundreds of cars in ditches have been reported in Whiteside, Lee, Ogle, and Carroll counties.

Accidents and impassable roads have led to the closures of several highways in the area.

State Route 2 is closed between Dixon and Oregon because of an accident involving a semitrailer and a snowplow. There were no injuries, Ogle County Sheriff Michael Harn said, fbut traffic is backed up more than a mile in each direction. The Rock Falls girls basketball team bus was among those stuck on Route 2. Their game at Oregon was postponed.

Other road closures in Ogle County are State Route 72 between Byron and Stillman Valley, and state Route 64 east of Oregon.
