Melton wins twice in Ottawa

Newman swimming falls on road; Morrison wrestling sweeps duals

Newman's Warren Melton won two events, but the Comets boys swimming team lost 71-23 on the road against Ottawa.

Melton won the 200 in 1 minute, 53.21 seconds and the 100 backstroke in 58.06.

Finishing in second for the Comets were Todd Nelson in the 100 breaststroke (1:15.83) and Robbie Hicks in the 100 freestyle (59.22).

Boys bowling

Rochelle 3,552, Dixon 3,494:
Lucas Bonnette had a high series of 667, but the Dukes fell to the Hubs in a NIB-12 meet at Plum Hollow.

Bonnette had games of 237, 195 and 235, as Dixon lost the first two games before rallying to take Game 3. Brandon Helfrich added a 595 series, which included games of 183, 210 and 202.

Rochelle was led by Michael Johnson with a 638 series.

Girls bowling

Ottawa 3,091, Sterling 2,871
: The Golden Warriors were swept of all 10 points in a NIB-12 match at Blackhawk Lanes.

Destinee Howard had a good day with games of 236, 192 and 183 for a 611 series. Magan Tintori added a 561 series.

Alexis Fuentes led Ottawa with a 578 series.

Wrestling

Morrison sweeps at home: The Mustangs buckled down to beat Three Rivers foe Riverdale 49-30 and followed that with a 54-24 win over Putnam County.

The Mustangs won eight contested matches against the Rams.

Morrison had four grapplers record two pins. Ethan Fischbach earned a pin at 120 pounds against Putnam County and 126 pounds against Riverdale. Also getting double pins were Dylan Keller (138), Austin Keller (152) and Tyler Todd (220).

Polo splits in Lena: The Marcos beat Winnebago 48-36, and lost to host Lena-Winslow 66-12 in a road triangular.

Jesse Ditzler was the lone double-winner for Polo, pinning both of his opponents at 126 pounds. Seth Phillips (160) and Miguel Dominguez (195) added pins against Winnebago, which gave the Marcos five forfeits.

Paul Smith won by pin at 132 against the Panthers.
