Volunteers sought for literacy class

DIXON – Volunteers in Teaching Adult Literacy will host biannual tutor training sessions beginning this month.

Tutors will attend classes from 4 to 7 p.m. Jan. 27 and Feb. 3, 10, and 17, with a completion celebration Feb. 17. All sessions are free and will be in Room 1E8 at Sauk Valley Community College, 173 state Route 2. Tutors must complete 12 hours of training. Dinner will be provided at all sessions.

Online training is available on the start date of the classes, as well to complete work during the training period. Sessions will educate tutors on understanding the needs of English as a Second Language and Adult Basic Education students, tutoring beginning readers, teaching strategies in writing and vocabulary, and lesson planning.

Project VITAL is a free and confidential program designed for local adults who want to improve reading, writing, and other basic academic skills. Tutors meet with students 2 to 3 hours a week. Materials and support are supplied.
