IDOT : Many Illinois roads still slick, dangerous
CHICAGO (AP) — Transportation officials are urging Illinoisans to avoid unnecessary travel because most roads throughout the state remain coated with snow and ice.
Illinois Department of Transportation spokeswoman Paris Ervin said Tuesday that emergency personnel are busy helping motorists who are sliding into ditches or crashing into each other.
She says most are driving too fast, as wind and drifting snow keep roads slick. Road crews throughout the state also say road salt is not particularly effective when the temperatures are extremely cold and the wind is blowing.
The National Weather Service says temperatures early this morning ranged from minus 12 in Chicago, to 11 below in Springfield and 1 below in Carbondale.
Ervin says people should just stay home and avoid the roadways altogether if they can.
