Tollway to double assistance patrols
DOWNERS GROVE (AP) – The Illinois Tollway plans to double the number of road assistance patrols to help motorists stranded during the severe cold weather moving into the region.
It says it’ll have 22 vehicles patrolling the 286 miles of interstate tollways that are spread over a dozen counties in northern Illinois.
Known as Zero Weather Road Patrols, those vehicles are dispatched any time temperatures or sustained wind chills are below zero degrees.
The air temperature in the area is expected to be about minus 10 during the day Monday with wind chills as low as 40 or 50 below zero.
The 24-hour patrols search for drivers in disabled vehicles and respond to calls to (star)999 motorist assistance.
Tollway Director Kristi Lafleur says motorists should stay with their vehicles if they become stranded.
