SPRINGFIELD (AP) — Illinois State Police say they've already rescued dozens of stranded drivers since a winter storm began pelting the state.

Sgt. Matt Boerwinkle says police in the department's Springfield region rescued 70 motorists stranded along area roadways. They also handled 22 crashes between 7 a.m. Sunday and 10 a.m. Monday.

Rescue numbers for the entire state were not immediately available.

A fierce winter storm dumped more than a foot of snow in many regions of Illinois during the weekend Sunday.

The snow is giving way to bitter temperatures that are expected to set record lows in some communities. Meanwhile, the wind was blowing snow, causing deep snow drifts.
