Warriors win on road

Marcos split at home; Hawk girls cruise at ’Bago

Joe Brouilette poured in a career-high 24 points, and the Sterling Golden Warriors picked up a Northern Illinois Big 12 crossover win on the road Saturday, downing Rochelle 72-65.

Draque Penaflor-Heier added 14 points, and Zach Rehmert scored 11 for the Warriors (4-7), who led 23-13 after one quarter, but needed a fourth-quarter rally to win. Sterling outscored the Hubs 22-10 over the final 8 minutes, erasing a 55-50 deficit after three periods.

Tyler Joyce hit seven of the Hubs’ 11 3-pointers and finished with 25 points.

Polo 69, Stockton 58: Brian Cavanaugh’s 20 points, five assists and four steals led the Marcos to an NUIC crossover victory at home.

AJ Dollmeyer added a double-double for Polo (15-1), finishing with 15 points and 13 rebounds.

Also for the Marcos, Wyatt Patterson had 11 points and six boards, and Matthew Handel (10 points) also scored in double figures, while Max Simmons (9 points) just missed.

The Marcos took control in the second quarter, outscoring the Blackhawks 21-12.

Sam VenHuizen led Stockton (6-6) with 16 points.

Girls basketball

Galesburg 49, Sterling 28: The Golden Warriors were shut out in the first quarter and never recovered against the host Silver Streaks at the Galesburg Shootout.

Kiarra Harris had eight points, and Gabby Sandoval added seven for Sterling (10-8). Haley Kelso scored 13 as one of three Streaks in double figures.

Oregon 60, Winnebago 35: The Hawks led 35-20 by halftime and never looked back in a Big Northern West road win.

Sam Lambrigtsen scored 18 of her game-high 26 points in the first half for Oregon (12-6, 4-1), and Emy Wright added 14 of her 16 points before the break. Both hit a pair of 3s, as did McCahl Sanders, who finished with 10 points.

Caley Niday scored 12 for the Indians (2-12, 0-4), and Maddy Williams added 10.

Stockton 54, Polo 28: The Marcos trailed 21-15 at halftime, then were outscored 19-3 in the third quarter of an NUIC crossover loss at home.

KeeLey Meyer was the lone player to reach double figures for Polo (1-13), scoring 11. Madalyn Dower (14 points) and Kara Wright (12 points) led the Blackhawks (6-8).

Eastland 61, River Ridge-Scales Mound 59, OT: The Cougars avenged an earlier loss to the Wildcats – their first loss of the season – with an overtime victory on the road.

Lexis Macomber scored 29 points for Eastland (14-3, 4-0 NUIC West), which fell to RRSM 53-49 in the title game of the Pearl City tournament on Dec. 21. Courtney Walker and Hannah Hake added 11 points apiece.

Katie Schnitzler hit three 3-pointers and led RRSM (8-4, 2-1) with 13 points.

Boys bowling

Dukes 4th at Toughman: Dixon finished in fourth place at the Toughman Invitational at Plum
Hollow Lanes.

The Dukes defeated DeLaSalle and Rochelle before falling to Freeport in the bracketed finals. Leading the way for Dixon was Lucas Bonnette, who had a five-game total of 1,075, including a high-game of 247.

The top bowler for Oregon was A.J. Nordman with a total of 1,053. His high game was 225.
