First Friday of the new year

OREGON – It’s the first Friday of the new year, so it’s time for music in Oregon.

Local bands and musicians will play as part of First Fridays, starting at 7 p.m. today at the Oregon Veterans of Foreign Wars Club, 1310 W. Washington St. Music includes country, bluegrass, blues, folk, gospel, soft rock, and eclectic mixes. Instruments are acoustic. A sound system is provided.

Go hear some live music

Local bands will be playing music at local bars this weekend. Here’s a sampling:

• The Giving Tree Band will play Saturday at Champ’s, 216 Locust St., in Sterling.

• Whitlocked and Loaded will play Saturday at Long Shot Sports Bar & Grill, 3312 W. Rock Falls Road, Rock Falls.

Wrestle up some fun

STERLING – Funky Munky Wrestling will be presented at 6:05 p.m. Saturday at Latin American Social Club, 2708 W. Lincolnway. The event will feature Funky Monkey’s Over the Top Rumble to crown the first-ever champion.

Doors open at 5 p.m. Tickets cost $10 at the door. Children 4 and younger get in for free.

Go see a movie

It’s cold outside. How about warming up inside with some popcorn and a movie?

At Sterling Theater, 402 Locust St., in downtown Sterling, you can see “Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones” or “Grudge Match.”

Both movies also are at the Sauk Valley 8, 4110 E. 30th St., Sterling. Also showing, among others, are “Wolf of Wall Street” and “Secret Life of Walter Mitty.”

Just because the Chicago Bears’ season is over doesn’t mean the NFL has ended play. Far from it!
