Recycling drop-off sites available

Published: Saturday, Jan. 11, 2014 1:15 a.m. CST

Ogle County Sold Waste Management Department offers options for recycling.

For household recyclable waste like cans, bottles, plastic containers, and paper products, residents can take advantage of the town’s curbside recycling program.

If the recycling bin is overflowing, use a tote or extra garbage can, and set it out with other recycling containers.

Wrapping paper can be recycled, but not plastic bags, bows, or ribbon.

Residents without curbside recycling can consider using one of the Ogle County drop-off recycling stations in Byron, Forreston, Monroe Center, Oregon, and Rochelle. For Polo area residents, a recycling container provided by Moring Disposal is at Franklin Avenue and Locust Streets.

Advanced Disposal Service provides a container at the Orchard Hills Landfill in Davis Junction.

All boxes and plastic containers must be flattened.

Recycle broken holiday string lights until Jan. 31 at fire stations in Byron, Mount Morris, Rochelle, and Stillman Valley. The Ogle County Courthouse, OCSWMD, village halls of Forreston or Davis Junction, and at Polo City Hall also will accept lights.

Most consumer electronics have been banned from landfills in Illinois, and cannot be thrown out with regular trash.

Some electronics can be recycled at Secure Recycling Services, 1115 Warp Road, Dixon; Best Buy Stores;, American TV store in Rockford; or Staples stores.

The OCSWMD, Byron Forest Preserve District, and Universal Recycling have two unstaffed drop-off sites available for recycling certain electronics. Large walk-in containers are at the OCSWMD, 909 W. Pines Road, Oregon, and at the Byron Forest Preserve District Stone Quarry parking lot, 6845 N. German Church Road, Byron. The city of Rochelle offers an electronics recycling program for residents.

Cell phones and laptops may be dropped off at the Rochelle City Hall or the Rochelle Municipal Utilities Customer Service Center, 420 N. Sixth St.

Other acceptable items can be dropped off at the RMU Water Treatment Lab, 33 Lincoln Highway, Rochelle.

Check with each entity to determine what they accept for recycling.

For more information on how to recycle waste or a list of acceptable items, contact OCSWMD at www.oglecounty.org or 800-732-4020.
