Illinois Marine sends flag to his high school

NORMAL (AP) — A Marine from Bloomington has given his central Illinois high school an American flag that was flown over a battlefield in Afghanistan.

Sal Garza is now a lance corporal, but he graduated from Normal Community West High School. On Monday his family presented the flag to high school principal Dave Johnson. The Pantagraph reports (http://bit.ly/JHVvFN) that it includes a plaque noting that it was flown at Camp Leatherneck, Helmand Province, Afghanistan, on Nov. 30 in honor of Normal West.

Garza sent along a message as well, saying all of the support from his high school "paid off." He sent the flag as a thank you.

Johnson says the school is "very proud" of Garza.
