Single-digit temps move across frigid Illinois

PERU (AP) — Bitter cold weather has moved into parts of northern Illinois, bringing wind chills as low as minus-17.

The National Weather Service says the temperature was 1 degree in Rockford on Monday afternoon. In Chicago it was just 9 degrees at O'Hare International Airport. Springfield saw a temperature of 12 and was Peoria was 10.

Authorities were warning residents to take precautions as the temperature drops. Chicago's Office of Emergency Management and Communications asked residents to check on the elderly and disabled.

In Peru, Illinois Valley Community Hospital said it would keep its cafeteria open around the clock as a warming center.
