Eastland, Polo advance to championship showdown Monday

The Dixon Dukes advanced to the ninth-place game at the 51st annual Plano Christmas Classic with a 50-42 victory over Rockford Christian on Saturday afternoon.

Cal Jarrett led the Dukes (12-1) with 11 points, nine rebounds and two assists, while Laron Carr finished with 10 points, two assists and two steals.

Nate Gascoigne, Kyle LeBlanc and Isaiah Roby each added seven points, with Roby chipping in six rebounds and three steals, and LeBlanc dishing two assists. Dixon will face Kaneland at 12:45 p.m. Monday for ninth place.

Brandon Williams and Lucheo Tombini scored nine points apiece for the Royal Lions, with Tombini grabbing four rebounds and Williams blocking two shots.

State Farm Classic

Olympia 73, Rock Falls 68: The Rockets hit just 19 of their 33 free throws, while Olympia made 27 of its 32 foul shots in the fifth-place consolation game at Normal West High School.

Austin Donoho had 15 points, Connor Cain scored 13, and Daegan Wharff added 11 for Rock Falls (4-7), which battled back after being outscored 24-12 in the first quarter.

Drew Stribling finished with 24 points for Olympia, hitting 14 of his 15 free throws.

Newman tournament

Paw Paw 63, Oregon 49: The Hawks fell behind 28-15 by halftime and never recovered in the third-place game at the KSB/Newman Christmas Classic.

Trevor Otten hit five 3-pointers and finished with 17 points to lead Oregon (4-10), while Jessie McKinley scored 16. Nicholas Siemers hit 10 of his 20 shots and all three of his free throws, pouring in 25 points to pace Paw Paw.

Durand 62, AFC 60: The Raiders led by four at halftime, but a 15-7 scoring edge by Durand in the third quarter was enough to send the Bulldogs to fifth place at the KSB/Newman Christmas Classic.

David Zinke hit three 3-pointers and finished with 17 points for AFC (4-6), while Troy Mairs (11 points) and Matt Gendusa (10 points) also hit double figures. Rhyse Evenson and James Bryant led Durand (5-7) with 15 points each.

Erie tournament

Lena-Winslow 48, Erie 40: Five 3-pointers and 17 points from Nich Wildt wasn’t enough to lift the Cardinals to victory at the Warkins Cardinal Classic.

Sean Maloney added eight points for Erie (0-12), which trailed 24-20 at halftime before being outscored by that same score in the second half. Hank Robinson scored 17 for the Panthers (3-7).

Stark County 53, Morrison 33: The Mustangs fell into a 31-10 halftime hole and couldn’t dig out of it at the Warkins Cardinal Classic.

Noah Hogue paced Morrison (5-9) with 10 points. Jake Berchtold’s game-high 13 points led Stark County.

Peoria Heights 69, Bureau Valley 61: Thanks in part to Parker Neuhalfen’s 25 points, the Storm rallied from an 11-point halftime deficit, but fell short down the stretch at the Warkins Cardinal Classic.

Josh Mead had 12 points, and Tommy Johnston added 10 for BV (8-7), which trailed only 45-43 heading into the final period.

Eastland tournament

Eastland 62, Fulton 52: After the teams were tied at 27 at halftime, the Cougars pulled away from the Steamers with a 19-9 third-quarter surge in Lanark.

Dalton Shaner’s 22 points paced Eastland (9-1), while Skylar Paulson added 17, and Eric Schaney chipped in 10.

Zach Barber hit four 3-pointers and finished with a game-high 23 points for Fulton (10-3).

Polo 70, Prophetstown 43: The Marcos hit just one 3, but scored 31 field goals in a rout in Lanark.

AJ Dollmeyer poured in 23 points, while Brad Cavanaugh added 14 and older brother Brian Cavanaugh scored 13 for Polo (13-1), which will play Eastland in the tournament championship Monday night.

Ethan Howard had 13 for the Prophets (3-7), who trailed 37-22 by halftime.

Pearl City 50, Amboy 38: The Clippers were outscored 19-10 in the final quarter as the Wolves pulled away in a close game in Lanark.

Damon Quest scored 17 for Amboy (2-9), which trailed just 29-28 after three periods. Cody Kluck’s 15 points paced Pearl City (4-10).

St. Thomas More New Year’s Challenge

Newman, Morrison lose duals: Newman fell 38-30 to Coal City and Morrison lost 48-27 to LeRoy.

Newman got pin wins from Hunter Webb (120 pounds), Jake Snow (152), Brandon Ahlgrim (160), and Brady Rude (170).

Morrison got pin wins from Hunter Ferguson (145), Austin Keller (152), and Jesse Lilly (285). The Mustangs’ Phoenix Parks (126) earned an 8-6 victory.
