Thank you for support of fundraiser

Published: Saturday, Jan. 11, 2014 1:15 a.m. CST

The Sterling Optimist Club would like to thank everyone who bought 12 Days of Christmas raffle tickets. We have been running this fundraiser for 10 years, and for the fifth year in a row, sold all 500 tickets printed, thanks to the generosity of those who bought a ticket.

Special thanks to the staff at Northland Mall for allowing us the visibility to sell tickets at the center of the mall during the holiday season. The proceeds raised from this raffle are used to help fund the $2,500 in scholarships that the Sterling Optimist Club awards to local high school graduating seniors who go on to attend Sauk Valley Community College each year.

The 12 winners were: $50 winners, David Taylor, Dixon; Carly Jo Grant, Sterling; Mary Fischbach, Rock Falls; Chad Hammer, Sterling; Maria Larkey, Rock Falls; Tara Johnson, Prophetstown; Summer John, Sterling; Angela Gomes, Dixon; Brad Bailey,  Sterling; and Jim Hammer, Sterling.

The $250 winner was Linda Wetzell of Morrison, and the $500 winner was Maxine Stern of Sterling.

Through this and the many other projects the Sterling Optimist Club runs throughout the year, the generous support of the Sauk Valley allows the club to fulfill our International Optimist Motto of being “Friends of Youth” to the youth of the community.

Thanks again, and we look forward to your continued support of our “12 Days of Christmas” raffle fundraiser next year and for many years to come.

Note to readers: Sam Meier is the club president, and Joe Martin is the project chairman.

Rock Falls is considering a ban on leaf burning. Should the city finally take that step?
Yes. Sterling and Dixon have had bans for years. It’s time for Rock Falls to impose a ban.
No. It would be too great a burden for homeowners to dispose of fallen leaves in other ways.
