Springfield woman gets 30 years in toddler's death

SPRINGFIELD (AP) — A Springfield woman has been sentenced to 30 years in prison in the 2012 smothering death of her 1-year-old daughter.

The State Journal-Register reports (http://bit.ly/19AOd19) 23-year-old Samaria Williams pleaded guilty Wednesday to first-degree murder, but a judge also found she was mentally ill at the time of the offense. Prosecutors said that ruling will allow her to receive mental health treatment while in prison.

Officials say Williams and the toddler were living in apartments for homeless women and children when maintenance workers found the dead child and an incoherent Williams in July 2012.

Williams initially was found unfit to stand trial, but a court then found her fit for trial in January.
