This week, guess the weight of this channel cat caught on the Rock River back in 2007 for your chance to win a prize.

Doe ho ho ... Merry Christmas! I am really starting to like these getaway deals. What a response we got this weekend to the first of three Christmas giveaways.

I tell you what, some of you out there are pretty darn good at this stuff. A couple of you oughta work at them guess-your-weight game things they got at Great America. You’d make the company proud, for sure. Pictures make weight guessing very tricky, and some of you continue to be very much in the ballpark every time. Kudos to you.

Now, of the more than 100 emails I got, sometimes containing guesses for as many as four family members, more than 80 of you were within 12 pounds of this brute.

This week’s lowest guess was 26 pounds, and this has prompted a big old fat “Come on, man” from me. This week’s chart topper was a robust 86-pound guess ... a tad large for this week, but again, pictures are tricky.

Now to the meat of the matter … just which one of your awesome guesses was the most awesomest? Well, it’s not going to be a surprise to you that we have a tie for the first prize of a custom rod from Pole Kat.

The Gorup flathead from last week’s article weighed in at 53.3 pounds. Frank Mendoza’s guess of 52.6 put him just a mere 13 ounces from pay dirt. However, Lenny Reiley came in with a stab of 54 pounds on the nose, which is also just 13 ounces off the pace. Now, since the tiebreaker was the order I received the guesses in, that put Mr. Reiley in victory circle this week. Congrats to you, you’ll be fishing in style next summer.

Mr. Mendoza, your second-place finish earns you a real cool set of black and blaze orange camouflage Catfish Academy hats. Gordon Nicklaus, your guess of 51.6 pounds earned you third place this week, and a 12-pack of J and N dip worms. Last but not least, Mr. Peter Fecht, your guess of 50.6 earned you fourth place, and a 3-pound tub of the best cheese bait on the planet, G and S Cheese Bait.

I hope you all enjoy the little guessing games, and the chance to win some nice stuff, because we got 2 more weeks to go. So if you haven’t won yet, keep on a-tryin’. Some of you know how close you have been, so like the lottery jingle says, “You can’t win if you don’t play.”

Oh, and you winners, I need your addresses, as I will be delivering your prizes in person. Shoot me an email when you get a chance.

Now this week, we are changing speed just a little bit. You’re still guessing weight, but this ain’t no flathead. This here is a purty old channel cat.

Yes, it’s a Rock River channel, caught back in 2007. It was the first fish of the day on a guide trip for a pair of newlyweds from Forreston ... or was it Mount Morris? … heck I don’t know, they were from the north.

In fact, the fish in this picture is what many people wrongly identify as a blue cat. Again, we have no blue cats here, this was just a big old swollen-up male channel cat. As always, send your guesses to flatheadmechanic40@gmail.com

So, be the closest this week to the weight of this pig, and win great prizes … like a massive hook bag from Matzuo hooks; a set of hats from G3 boats in Lebanon, Missouri; more great bait from G and S Cheese Bait; and swag from the Catfish Academy, as well.

Now, it’s time to climb a tree and see if I can’t get a shot at a big old buck deer ... yee yee! So, until next week ...

Go Catfish!
