ROCK FALLS – Doug N. Hand, 62, of Rock Falls, died Wednesday, Dec. 11, 2013, at Serenity Hospice & Home in Oregon.

He was born April 21, 1951, in Sterling, the son of Nathan and Marion (Poulter) Hand. He was a graduate of Rock Falls High School, Sauk Valley Community College, and Northern Illinois University. He earned his master’s degree in education from National Lewis University. He married Susan VanOsteen on June 18, 1988, in San Jose, Calif. Doug was an educator, having taught for 39 years in the Rock Falls District 13 system – 29 years at Thome School and 10 years at Merrill Elementary School. He retired in 2012. He was the originator and innovator of travels for “Elwood.” He was a member of Rock Falls Optimist Club for more than 30 years, and served as past president of the Rock Falls Library Board. He was an avid crossword puzzle worker and a Jeopardy fanatic.

Surviving are his wife, Susan, his daughter, Tracy Diane Hand, and his brother, Mark Hand, all of Rock Falls.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

A gathering of friends and family will be from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Saturday and a memorial service at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, 703 Third Ave., Sterling, with the Rev. Mark Oehlert officiating. McDonald Funeral Home & Crematory in Rock Falls is handling arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Rock Falls Public Library.
