Two taken to Rockford after accident

GRAND DETOUR – Two people were injured in a two-car accident Tuesday afternoon on state Route 2 near the Grand Detour bridge.

Lee County Sheriff John Varga said the accident call came in at about 2:25 p.m. He said the cause of the accident appeared to be weather-related and believed that speed was not an issue.

According to the sheriff, one of the cars apparently hit an ice patch as it was heading south into Dixon on state Route 2. The vehicle then spun sideways and was hit on its passenger side by the other vehicle that was heading north toward Oregon.

The drivers, whose names were not yet released, were the only people in their respective vehicles. Both were taken by helicopter to a Rockford hospital. Varga said the injuries were not thought to be life-threatening.

The accident shut down a stretch of state Route 2 near the Grand Detour bridge for about an hour.
