CHICAGO (AP) – A suburban man faces multiple charges including driving under the influence in the death of a bicyclist who was riding on Chicago’s West Side.
Cook County Judge James Brown set bail Sunday at $400,000 for 54-year-old Robert Vais of Riverside. Prosecutors say Vais’ blood-alcohol level was over the legal limit when his van hit 28-year-old Hector Avalos of Chicago late Friday.
Avalos was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital where he was pronounced dead early Saturday.
Vais, who stayed at the scene of the collision, has been charged with driving while under the influence in a fatal accident and other charges.
Vais’ attorney, Rick Beuke, said his client is devastated and that it was a “tragic accident.”
