STERLING – John H. “JJ” Brooks Jr., 68, of Sterling, died Saturday, Dec. 7, 2013, at CGH Medical Center in Sterling.
He was born Nov. 15, 1945, in Philadelphia, where he was raised and educated. John was a veteran of the Vietnam War, having served in the Air Force. Following that time period, he began traveling with Rudy Hunter’s band. This brought him to Sterling, where he enjoyed the people and community so much that he made it his permanent home. He married Mary E. “Liz” Woodard on Oct. 31, 2003, in Sterling. JJ was a much-loved and talented singer and musician, playing the saxophone and flute with various local bands, and always going out of his way to make sure people were having a good time.
He had worked at John A. Loos & Sons for 15 years, and after his retirement, he worked part-time at Menards in Sterling.
JJ had a cheerful word for everybody he saw, and touched countless lives with his optimism and joy for life.
Surviving is his wife, Liz of Sterling; his son, Bradley Brooks of Omaha, Neb.; his mother, Bertha Jones, and his brother, Ronald (Paula) Brooks, both of Philadelphia; numerous nieces, nephews, and great-nieces; as well the great bond of love he had with all of his in-laws.
He was preceded in death by his father, John H. Brooks Sr.; stepfather, Joseph Wilson, who raised the boys, and later by stepfather John Jones; and his brother, Walter Brooks.
A gathering of friends and family will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at McDonald Funeral Home & Crematory, 1002 12th Ave., Rock Falls.
