Save Lincoln School; utilize city’s windfall

I would like to respond to the letter titled “Use windfall to help keep school open” that appeared Nov. 30 and was well written by Nancy K. Lahman of Dixon.

I wholeheartedly agree with the letter concerning the closing of Lincoln School in Dixon. She suggests using Dixon’s “windfall” from “the Rita thing” to take care of the $1.48 million debt of the schools in Dixon and allow Lincoln School to remain open.

Of course, that is what should be done. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure that out. It appears to me that the schools would not be so far in debt if it were not for the mishandling of funds by Rita, but now there is an answer for the schools to be debt free.

Why would fourth- and fifth-graders be sent to Reagan School? They do not need to be exposed to the older students, the language, and sometimes bullying that we’ve heard about there. I have heard some say that Lincoln School needs a lot of repair work to make it more habitable. Well, now Dixon is able to take care of that problem and keep the school open.

I have also heard that Lincoln School is the best-run grade school in Dixon. I have spoken to people who have been very pleased with the administration and staff. Where will these capable people be working if the school closes? The south side of Dixon should have a good grade school for their students.

I encourage the “powers that be” to step back and take another look at this problem. The children are the future, and Dixon has an obligation to give them the best education that is possible. Closing Lincoln School simply should not happen.
