Forum topic Thursday is war on terror

Published: Tuesday, Dec. 10, 2013 1:15 a.m. CDT

The Rock River Open Forum would like to invite the public to a showing and discussion of the DVD “Dirty Wars” at 6 p.m. Thursday at the Rock Falls Public Library.

The DVD explores America’s covert operations regarding its war on terror. It tracks the work of investigative reporter Jeremy Scahill, who has exposed the actions of Blackwater and other private security contractors, the CIA’s Special Activities Division, and the Joint Special Operations Command.

The DVD begins with Scahill’s investigation of a night raid and the killing of several Afghanis in a very remote area of Afghanistan. We follow his detective work in the United States, Yemen, and Somalia as he tries to ferret out the reason for this seemingly unimportant action and cover-up in its covert war on terror. His persistence and bravery reach to the president of the United States and the extent of our culture of war.

Some of his findings include:

n The entire world is a battlefield.

n No war has been declared.

n Most of this battle is covert.

n The public and the press are basically unaware of our country’s actions.

n There is no effective congressional oversight or public debate.

n The U.S. is becoming more involved in global conflicts and is serving as a destabilizing influence.

n Our policies are creating more enemies.

The DVD is 90 minutes long, and a lively discussion is anticipated.
