MINOR LEAGUE BASEBALL
Blair moved to AAA Memphis
The St. Louis Cardinals reshaped their minor-league rosters in order to protect certain players from the Rule 5 draft. One of the players moved up to be protected was Rock Falls graduate Seth Blair.
Blair has been moved up from AA to the team’s AAA affiliate in Memphis.
These players are still eligible to be selected in the Rule 5 draft, but they must be placed on the team’s major-league roster and kept there all season in order to wrest control of them from the Cardinals.
Rose doesn’t rule out return this year
Derrick Rose isn’t quite ruling out a return to the Chicago Bulls this season.
The superstar point guard left the door slightly open for a comeback in the playoffs if his surgically repaired right knee is healed – even though the team has said he will miss the rest of the year.
“If I’m healthy and the situation is right, I will be back playing,” Rose said Thursday when asked if he might return for the playoffs. “If I’m healthy and my meniscus is fully healed, of course I’ll be out there playing. But if it’s something totally different, and the outcome is not how I would want it to be, there’s no need.”
Lynch a finalist for Camp Award
Northern Illinois quarterback Jordan Lynch became the first Mid-American Conference player ever to be named a finalist for the Walter Camp Football Foundation Player of the Year Award.
The other four finalists for the award announced Thursday are quarterbacks A.J. McCarron of Alabama, Johnny Manziel of Texas A&M and Jameis Winston of Florida State, and Boston College running back Andre Williams.
Changes made to Hall of Fame process
NASCAR announced sweeping changes to the Hall of Fame election process Thursday, including tweaks that make Bill Elliott and Mark Martin immediately eligible for enshrinement.
Among the six changes: Drivers are now eligible if they have competed for 30 or more years in NASCAR, or turned 55 in the calendar year before nominating day.
Previously, drivers were not eligible until they had been retired for 3 years, so drivers can continue to compete and still reach the Hall.
