STERLING – Two men were in the Whiteside County Jail on Monday after one was hit in the head with a beer bottle after trying to stab the other, authorities said.
Sterling Police responded to a call about a fight Saturday just before 10:30 p.m. in the 1500 block of East 25th Street. Police say the fight was between Eric A. Smith, 33, of Como, and Donald A. Schultz, 44, of Sterling.
During the fight, police said, Smith tried to stab Schultz with a knife. After authorities arrived, police tried to separate the two men when Schultz hit Smith with a bottle.
Police said Schultz was taken to CGH Medical Center, where he was treated for minor injuries and released; Smith refused treatment.
Smith is charged with aggravated battery and unlawful possession of a weapon by a felon; his bond is set at $200,000.
Schultz is charged with aggravated battery; his bond is $50,000.
Smith’s felony convictions in Whiteside County include burglary, residential burglary, robbery, unlawful possession of a weapon by a felon, and two convictions for criminal damage to property in excess of $300, according to online court records.
Schultz’s Whiteside County felony convictions include unlawful possession of a stolen vehicle and forgery.
