Relief donations encouraged Saturday

Donations of toiletries, gloves, hats, scarves and Wal-Mart gift cards will be accepted Saturday at the Newman-Mercer County Class 2A semifinal football game, and delivered to those in need in tornado-affected Washington.


Reynolds named to CCIW first team

Sterling graduate and Carthage College senior Bari Reynolds was named to the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin first team.

Reynolds was fourth at No. 1 singles at the conference tournament. She teamed up with Haleigh McPeek to go 15-2 in doubles and win a conference title.


Four Bears assist in
Coal City relief efforts

Bears players Robbie Gould, Zack Bowman, Sherrick McManis and Blake Costanzo visited Coal City on Tuesday to help the Red Cross’ relief efforts and raise awareness.

They delivered boxed lunches, snacks and
supplies to residents of Diamond Estates, one of the hardest-hit areas by the EF-2 tornado that touched down in town.


Bulls’ Butler sits out practice, has MRI

After the Chicago Bulls’ victory Monday over Charlotte, Jimmy Butler vowed to play through his right toe injury Thursday in Denver.

Butler missed practice and underwent an MRI exam Tuesday.


Vonn evaluated after crash during training

Olympic champion Lindsey Vonn was evaluated by an orthopedic surgeon after a Tuesday morning crash at Copper Mountain, Colo., while training for her first race since major knee surgery last winter.

Vonn was not admitted to a hospital, but went to nearby Vail to see Bill Sterrett, who performed the Feb. 10 surgery to repair a torn ACL and MCL in her right knee.



Golson reapplies
at Notre Dame

Everett Golson, suspended by Notre Dame for cheating on a final exam last spring, submitted an application for readmission to Notre Dame for the spring semester.

Golson started at quarterback for the Irish in the national championship game in 2012.


France makes Cup; U.S. loses friendly

France overcame a two-goal deficit Tuesday to beat Ukraine 3-2 and qualify for next year’s World Cup finals via the playoffs. The U.S. team, meanwhile, ended its year with a controversial 1-0 defeat against Austria in Vienna.

France, the 1998 World Cup champ, became the first team to fight back from 2-0 down in European World Cup playoffs.

The U.S., which had won 15 of its previous 16 internationals, had a goal disallowed because the referee ruled the ball had not crossed the line while the game was scoreless.
