NIB-12 West names all-conference

Three Sterling Golden Warriors and two Dixon Duchesses were named to the NIB-12 West All-Conference first team. Sterling seniors Darien Bardoner and Kiarra Harris were joined by freshman Kaylee Martin on the first team.

Dixon junior Amy Rotella and freshman Jessa Long were also named to the 11-person first team. LaSalle-Peru senior Katie Olson was named MVP. A full listing of the conference team is on B3.


Hawaii AD injured in postgame melee

Hawaii athletic director Ben Jay was injured during the chaos that resulted from a scuffle involving members of the West Virginia women’s basketball team, their fans and at least one Hawaii fan.

Jay tried to intervene and said he got hit in the back, a blow that left him kneeling near center court for more than 10 minutes while he received treatment from EMTs.


Tolzien will start against Vikings

Aaron Rodgers still is not ready to return from his fractured left collarbone, meaning Scott Tolzien will draw a second straight start at quarterback for the Green Bay Packers this Sunday.

Head coach Mike McCarthy confirmed Monday that Tolzien, who has spent the majority of this season on the practice squad, will be under center when the slumping Packers host Minnesota this weekend.


Washington State extends Leach

Washington State gave coach Mike Leach a contract extension through the end of the 2018 season.

The Cougars are within reach of a bowl game for the first time since 2003. They are 5-5 after beating Arizona on Saturday and have Utah and Washington left on their schedule.

The five wins are the most for Washington State at this point of the season since 2006.


Hudson signs 2-year deal with Giants

The San Francisco Giants have agreed to terms on a 2-year deal with right-handed pitcher Tim Hudson.

Hudson, 38, was 8-7 with a 3.97 for the Atlanta Braves this past season.

He is expected to make the Giants’ strong pitching staff even stronger if he is completely recovered from a severe ankle injury that required surgery and forced him to miss the final 2 months of the 2013 season.

Ruiz, Phillies agree to 3-year deal

Catcher Carlos Ruiz drew heavy interest in free agency but opted to return to the Philadelphia Phillies.

Ruiz and the Phillies agreed to 3-year, $26 million contract with a team option for the fourth season. Ruiz will receive a buyout payment of $500,000 if the Phillies decline the option.
